Early into competition season, and with only their first competition under their belts, Montini Catholic's Robotics Team (82997A) were elated to hear the news that they have already qualified to compete in the 2023 VEX Illinois State Championship Tournament in spring 2023.
The 2022-23 season got underway on Sunday, November 20th when the Bronco team competed at the VEX Tournament at Batavia High School. "This is the first time in the history of our Robotics Team that we competed before the holidays," said coach and Technology Director Pete Farina '87. "The students' dedication this summer, and over these past several weeks, made this possible and they were so excited to get started early!"
This is now the fourth straight year in a row that Montini Catholic's Robotics Team (82997A) has qualified for State. After their final regular season tournament results from the Von Steuben Metro Science Academy in Chicago (February 2022), the 'varsity' team was ranked 15th out of over 200 teams in Illinois. Last season they were the highest ranked private high school in the state of Illinois. The team was two spots shy of qualifying for the 2022 World Tournament, but they are very optimistic about 2023.
"This year the team has been incredibly dedicated and focused on taking it as far as they can this season. Back in June they started work on this season's robot earlier than ever before," said Farina. "Over the summer and fall the team has poured in the hours of hard work and it really shows! This is the earliest in the season that we've ever competed and the earliest we've ever qualified for the State Championship. The team has two more regular season tournaments and I can't wait to see how they improve as they prepare for State!"
The next two regular tournaments are on January 8th and February 5th, both at Batavia High School. The VEX State Tournament will be held on the Millikin Campus in Decatur, IL on Friday, March 10th and Saturday, March 11th.
